Guffey sits around 8,600 feet in southern Park County, up in the high grassland and volcanic country between Currant Creek Pass and Hartsel. Building stock is log cabins, heavy-timber homes, board-and-batten frame, and a fair number of owner-built places on large parcels. Metal roofs are the norm because snow needs somewhere to go. Almost nothing up here is stucco, and almost everything is wood taking direct UV.

UV intensity climbs with elevation, and at 8,600 feet a south-facing log wall takes damage that would take years longer to show at valley elevation. The sun breaks down lignin in exposed wood. Logs go silver, the surface fibers powder off, and any finish on top goes with them. Deck restoration and log work here start with removing that dead layer, then a penetrating finish instead of a film that will peel in sheets.

The season is short and the nights are cold. Coatings need surface temperature above their minimum through the full cure window, not just at the moment of application, and up here that window closes early in the afternoon by October. We schedule Guffey work for the middle of the season and watch overnight lows. Deck painting and roof coating both fail if they freeze green.
