Calhan came up as a railroad town in the late 1880s, and the older housing near the center of town reflects it: small frame houses with wood lap siding, simple gable roofs, and trim that has been painted over many times. High-plains sun and single-digit humidity dry that film out until it chalks and loses adhesion. House painting here is a prep job first. Scrape, spot prime, caulk, then two coats.

Outside town it is ranch and farm ground: houses on acreage, pole barns, metal outbuildings, and the El Paso County Fairgrounds. There is no shelter from wind here, and the daily temperature swing runs wide, warm afternoon to hard freeze overnight for much of the year.
